The CircularTrace Consortium: Innovation Driven by Collaboration

Who We Are

CircularTrace is a pioneering research project born from a powerful collaboration between leading Indonesian academic institutions. We are a consortium of researchers from three distinguished universities — Universitas Andalas, Universitas Jember, and Universitas Brawijaya — united by a common goal: to revolutionize the Indonesian coffee industry.

Our endeavour is made possible through the generous funding and support of the RIKUB Fund, provided by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemenristekdikti) of the Republic of Indonesia.

Our Project

CircularTrace is dedicated to developing and implementing next-generation coffee processing methodologies. Our core focus is on creating a system that is fundamentally based on the Circular Economy and digitally enhanced for robust Traceability.

We move beyond traditional sustainability by designing a holistic model that optimises resource utilisation, minimises waste, and ensures that every stage of the coffee value chain generates positive environmental and social impacts. Our research rigorously evaluates the triple bottom line: Social, Economic, and Ecological (Sustainability) impacts, setting a new benchmark for ethical and responsible coffee production in Indonesia and globally.

By working directly with coffee farmers and processing units, we transform theoretical models into practical, scalable solutions that promise a brighter, more sustainable future for Indonesian coffee.

Vision, Mission, and Goals

Our Vision

To be the leading national reference for sustainable and traceable coffee processing methodologies, driving the transformation of the Indonesian coffee sector into a globally competitive, economically just, and ecologically sound industry.

Our Mission

1. Innovation and Research:

To conduct cutting-edge research focused on optimizing resource efficiency and waste valorization within the coffee supply chain, grounding all methods in the principles of the Circular Economy.

2. Digital Integration:

To develop and implement robust digital traceability systems that ensure transparent sourcing, quality assurance, and proof of sustainability for every batch of coffee.

3. Community Empowerment:

To foster strong partnerships with local coffee farming communities, providing training and technologies that enhance their economic welfare and social capital.

4. Triple Bottom Line Impact:

To rigorously measure and enhance the positive social, economic, and ecological impacts of our developed processing methods (Sustainability).

Our Goals

  • 1. Methodology Development: Successfully develop, validate, and publish a scalable, Circular Economy-based coffee processing methodology within the project timeline.
  • 2. Technology Transfer: Implement the developed processing and traceability systems in pilot coffee production units across West Sumatra, East Java, and Brawijaya's network.
  • 3. Policy Contribution: Provide data-driven recommendations to the Indonesian government and industry stakeholders to encourage wider adoption of sustainable practices.
  • 4. Human Capital Development: Mentor and train a new generation of Indonesian researchers and agricultural professionals specializing in sustainable coffee value chains.
